ANCIENT GREEK CERAMICS
This amphora represents the marine style characterized by the depiction of octopuses and other molluscs. The octopus was a very important symbol for Minoan culture as it was not only an indicator of wealth but also of food and explained the cult that the people of Crete had for the sea. This style developed around 1500 BC. C.
Marine-style pottery began to compete with older plant and flower paintings and was exported from Crete throughout Greece.
